Using these VPs, fully meshed virtual networks can be build on top of the physical backbone network. In this paper we discuss several issues related to the cost optimal dimensioning of VP networks. The dimensioning problem is formulated as a mathematical optimization problem and a solution method is proposed. Results for a 23 node example network will be shown. Introduction Future public ATM networks will have a layered structure consisting of local networks, access networks and a long distance backbone network [1]. Network engineering will be done separately for these subnetworks in order to reduce complexity and to consider speci c demands for each layer. Only backbone facility network engineering problems will be regarded here. Two features of ATM have a substantial impact on these engineering problems: the cell based transmission allowing statistical multiplexing and the possibility to supply virtual paths. In this paper we consider only VPs with deterministic bandwidths that are not subject to statistical cell multiplexing with cells from di erent VPs. Therefore the sum of VP bandwidths on a physical link must not be greater than the link capacity (see gure 1).

Navigation of a Mobile Robot Using Virtual Potential Field and Artificial Neural Network
Mobile robot navigation is one of the basic problems in robotics. In this paper, a new approach is proposed for autonomous mobile robot navigation in an unknown environment. The proposed approach is based on learning virtual parallel paths that propel the mobile robot toward the track using a multi-layer, feed-forward neural network. For training, a human operator navigates the mobile robot in ...

Motivated by Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) in telecommunication networks, we investigate the problem of designing a directed virtual topology on a directed physical topology, which consists in nding a set of directed virtual paths (VPs) satisfying some constraints in terms of load (the number of VPs sharing a physical link) and hop count (the number of VPs used to establish a connection). Fo...
متن کاملVirtual path layouts optimizing total hop count on ATM tree networks
This paper presents some algorithmic results concerning virtual path layouts for the one-to-many communication problem in ATM tree networks. The ATM network model is based on covering the network with a layout of virtual paths, under some constraints on the allowed load, namely, the number of paths that can share an edge. The quality measure used is the hop count, namely, the number of edges tr...
متن کاملImplementation of WAN networks over ATM
The objective of this paper is to show the possible ways of implementing WAN networks over ATM networks. The first part is a presentation of the various standardised network data protocols for the transfer of data on public data networks and their relation to ATM. We quickly come to the realisation that the predominant protocol is currently the TCP/IP, which is also used on the known computer n...
متن کاملA Model for Virtual Tree Bandwidth Allocation in ATM Networks
The technique of Virtual Paths is used in ATM networks to perform bandwidth allocation for virtual circuits and to simplify setting up of virtual circuits in response to connection requests. In this paper, we describe a new technique called Virtual Trees that can be used for bandwidth allocation in ATM networks. A Virtual Tree corresponds to pre-allocated bandwidth along a set of links in the n...
